For most US dental schools, the dental school application is a single online form called ADEA AADSAS, run by the American Dental Education Association. You complete it once, and it goes to every participating school you choose. Texas residents applying to Texas dental schools use a different service, TMDSAS.
ADEA names each cycle by academic year, and the cycle for a 2027 start is 2026-27. Northeast Ohio Medical University’s Bitonte College of Dentistry tells applicants that those “seeking to begin study in 2027” apply “in the 2026-27 application cycle.” Every date and fee below was read on October 12, 2026 and, unless the text says otherwise, belongs to that cycle.
The cycle is already under way: AADSAS takes submissions until February 5, 2027, but some school deadlines have passed. If you are aiming for fall 2028, treat these dates as last cycle’s pattern and recheck each one when the 2027-28 cycle opens.
The Dental School Application Timeline for 2026-27
These dates come from ADEA’s AADSAS page and the AADSAS help center’s cycle dates page. They apply to fall 2027 entry.
| Milestone | Date (2026-27 cycle) |
|---|---|
| Fee Assistance Program application opens | April 15, 2026 |
| Application opens | May 12, 2026 |
| First day to submit | June 2, 2026 |
| Academic Update, first period | August 13 to September 29, 2026 |
| Academic Update, second period | December 1, 2026 to February 5, 2027 |
| Acceptance notification date | December 15, 2026 |
| Cycle closes: last day to submit, request evaluations or update coursework | February 5, 2027, 11:59 p.m. ET |
| Transcripts and official test scores matched (5 p.m. ET); last day for evaluators (11:59 p.m. ET) | February 10, 2027 |
| Last day to submit all official documents (ADEA's AADSAS page) | February 11, 2027 |
| Last day to be verified; all processing ends | February 12, 2027 |
The two ADEA pages differ on the document cutoff by one day. The AADSAS page gives February 11, 2027 as the “Last day to submit all official documents,” while the help center says transcripts and official test scores must be matched by 5 p.m. ET on February 10. Plan around the earlier date.
ADEA’s general planning timeline, which names no cycle, says the cycle “generally opens on or around June 1.” In 2026 the first submission day, June 2, came closest to that; the application itself opened May 12.
These are the service’s dates, not your schools’. The help center adds that “the individual program’s deadline may differ from the application’s cycle dates,” and the school’s deadline is the one that binds you.
How AADSAS Works
ADEA calls AADSAS “a centralized application service that allows applicants to apply to multiple schools utilizing one online application.” It serves D.D.S. and D.M.D. applicants in the United States and Canada, and ADEA’s own wording: “Most U.S. dental schools participate in ADEA AADSAS and require it as the primary application.” The help center adds that programs outside AADSAS “handle their application processes separately.”
The service collects your materials, verifies your coursework and sends the file on. Decisions stay with the schools. In a note on letter ratings, ADEA says admissions committees “will continue to use school-specific admissions processes.” The help center adds that each school “sets unique application requirements,” such as test scores or a supplemental application.
What the Dental School Application Asks For
| Requirement | What AADSAS asks (2026-27 cycle) |
|---|---|
| Personal statement | One prompt, no more than 4,500 characters including spaces; the same essay goes to every school |
| Letters of evaluation | Up to 4: four individual letters, or one committee letter or packet plus up to three individual letters |
| DAT scores | Official scores, sent by the American Dental Association |
| Transcripts | Official transcripts from every US and English-Canadian college you list |
| Coursework | Entered course by course, then verified and turned into AADSAS GPAs |
| School requirements | Set by each school, including supplemental applications, fees and deadlines |
The personal statement answers one prompt, “What motivated you to pursue a career in oral health?”, within 4,500 characters, and our annotated dental school personal statement examples deal with the writing itself.
ADEA’s AADSAS page also lists a change to the agreement statement. Applicants must “acknowledge all work is their own, even if feedback is received from others, including artificial intelligence (AI).” Feedback is permitted, but the work has to be yours.
That is the line ExceptionalGrad works on: we edit and advise, and we never write an application for you. Our medical school application consulting page names dentistry among the paths its advisors cover: “Whether you are aiming for medical school, PA school, dentistry, or applying to residency, our advisors understand the rigors and demands of the application process.”
Letters of evaluation
The help center’s evaluations guide sets the cap: “You can enter information for a maximum of 4 evaluations.” That means up to four individual letters, or one committee letter or packet plus up to three individual ones. Evaluators submit through Liaison Letters themselves, and extra letters go straight to the schools.
The evaluation form changed as well: ADEA’s AADSAS page says letter writers now rate 10 attributes, from critical thinking to self-awareness, on a scale that includes “Not observed.” The page notes that the dental school admissions community expects many letters, especially committee and Interfolio letters, to carry all “NA/Not Observed” responses. It adds: “Dental school admissions committees account for differences in evaluations.”
School rules sit on top of the cap. UNLV’s fall 2027 timeline asks for either a pre-health professions committee letter or four individual letters, one of them from a dentist. The evaluations guide warns that “completed evaluations cannot be removed or replaced,” so read each school’s rules before you send requests.
DAT scores
The American Dental Association runs the Dental Admission Test, and its DAT page says the test “is accepted by all U.S. dental schools and select dental schools in Canada.” It has four sections: Survey of the Natural Sciences, Perceptual Ability, Reading Comprehension and Quantitative Reasoning. The total administration time is five hours and 15 minutes.
Official scores travel from the ADA to AADSAS electronically, and your DENTPIN and date of birth must be in the application for them to match. The help center’s DAT scores page says scores can arrive “at any point during the application cycle, even after your application is submitted.” It also warns that “some programs may have a deadline by which they want your scores posted.”
Transcripts and verification
AADSAS needs an official transcript from every US and English-speaking Canadian institution in your Colleges Attended section. That includes schools whose courses later transferred elsewhere. The transcript rules require originals addressed to ADEA AADSAS, and they are blunt: “We cannot process your application without receiving all of your transcripts.”
Verification then standardizes your record. Each course goes into an AADSAS subject category, each grade becomes an AADSAS grade value, and your GPAs are calculated from the converted grades. If significant mistakes turn up, the application is undelivered, which means “returned to you for corrections.”
Dental School Application Fees in 2026-27
The help center’s fees page states the base cost: “ADEA AADSAS charges $264 for the first program you apply to and $115 for each additional program.” Some schools add a supplemental fee of their own. You pay by credit card inside the application, and the submission guide says refunds “are not typically granted.”
Fee help exists for both the application and the test. ADEA’s Fee Assistance Program waiver “covers the cost of the first three dental school applications, a value of $494,” awarded first come, first served. The 2026-27 program has closed, and it reopens in April 2027 for the 2027-28 cycle.
For the DAT, the ADA offers a partial waiver worth 50% of the test fee. Its page says every 2026 waiver has been granted and more become available January 1, 2027.
Dental School Application Deadlines Are Set by Each School
ADEA is direct about it: “Each dental school has its own application deadline.” The help center says deadlines “are determined by each participating program, not ADEA AADSAS.” You can submit until 11:59 p.m. ET on a school’s deadline date, but AADSAS will not forward an application it receives after that school’s deadline.
Two schools in the 2026-27 cycle show how far apart deadlines can sit. Iowa’s passed on September 30, 2026; UNLV’s falls in January 2027.
| School | Deadline for fall 2027 entry | What it requires by then |
|---|---|---|
| University of Iowa College of Dentistry | September 30, 2026, 11:59 p.m. EST | All materials received and verified; incomplete files, such as those missing official DAT scores, are cancelled |
| UNLV School of Dental Medicine | January 2027 (AADSAS application) | Other supporting documents by February 2027 |
Iowa’s rule shows why “submitted” and “on time” are different things. ADEA says that once the application, fee payment and official transcripts arrive, “it usually takes about four to six weeks to process an application.” Its help center puts verification alone at up to 10 business days once a file is Complete; the two pages do not match, so plan on the longer figure.
Working back from September 30, a safe Iowa submission date was around August 19 at the latest, by our arithmetic. ADEA’s own advice is to submit during the summer: “do not wait until deadlines approach.”
Interviews overlap with the application window. Iowa’s run from August to November 2026, so preparing for dental school interview questions belongs in your summer plan. ADEA lists December 15, 2026 as the acceptance notification date, and Iowa sends its decisions that day.
Texas Dental Schools Apply Through TMDSAS
ADEA’s AADSAS page says Texas residents applying to Texas dental schools “will need to apply through the Texas Medical & Dental Schools Application Service (TMDSAS).” TMDSAS sets one submission deadline for its dental programs. Its Entry Year 2027 dates for dental applicants are below; TMDSAS prints them without years, so the years are ours.
| Date (Entry Year 2027) | What happens |
|---|---|
| May 1, 2026 | Application becomes available, 8 a.m. CST |
| May 15, 2026 | Submission opens, 8 a.m. CST |
| October 1, 2026 | Submission deadline for dental programs, 11:59 p.m. CST |
| October 15, 2026 | Letters of evaluation should be uploaded or postmarked |
| December 15, 2026 | Dental schools begin extending offers of acceptance |
| April 15, 2027 | Dental schools can no longer make offers to applicants holding another seat |
TMDSAS states that it “does not grant deadline extensions under any circumstances,” so the Entry Year 2027 dental deadline closed on October 1, 2026. Its page listed no Entry Year 2028 dates when we read it on October 12, 2026. A Texas resident who also applies outside Texas therefore works to two calendars: TMDSAS for the Texas schools and AADSAS for the rest.
Before You Submit
Submitting early does not require a finished file. The submission guide says you can submit “before your transcripts and evaluations are received,” although nothing is reviewed until all transcripts, payments and evaluations arrive. What you cannot do is revise: after submission, most sections lock, and the personal statement “cannot be edited or changed.”
That makes the read before submission the one that counts. ExceptionalGrad’s medical school and residency application review is about “ensuring that your application is free of errors” and about how your key experiences come across. If you are applying this cycle, start with a free consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions
In May for fall 2027 entry: AADSAS opened May 12, 2026 and TMDSAS May 1, 2026, with submissions from June 2 and May 15. ADEA’s undated timeline puts the AADSAS opening “on or around June 1.” A fall 2028 start means the 2027-28 cycle; ADEA’s Fee Assistance Program reopens for it in April 2027.
Through AADSAS in the 2026-27 cycle, $264 for the first school and $115 for each one after it, so ten schools cost $1,299 by our arithmetic. Supplemental school fees and the DAT fee come on top. An ADEA fee waiver, when awarded, covers the first three schools, a value of $494.
Two windows in the 2026-27 cycle: August 13 to September 29, 2026 and December 1, 2026 to February 5, 2027. It is optional and reports grades for courses you listed as planned or in progress. You need one program in Verified status by February 5, 2027, and you can update grades only once.
Up to 10 business days once your application reaches Complete status, per the AADSAS help center, with files verified in chronological order. ADEA’s AADSAS page gives a longer figure, about four to six weeks to process an application once application, fee and transcripts arrive. Plan on the longer one; a late transcript delays both.
