At most of the schools we read, grad school application deadlines are set program by program, not on one shared calendar. Princeton’s Graduate School says it plainly: “Departments and programs have varied application deadline dates.” At Cornell, the rules sit with each field: “Each field sets its own admission requirements and makes independent admission decisions.”
This guide shows when the programs named here close for fall 2027 entry, read on their own pages in October 2026, and what their priority, rolling and funding dates mean. How the application itself works, from tests to decisions, is covered in our separate guide to applying to grad school. Law school, MBA and medical school deadlines are not covered here.
Key Takeaways
- Dates differ program by program at Berkeley, Princeton, Fordham and BU Wheelock. For fall 2027, Princeton’s deadline table runs from November 15 to December 21, 2026, and Berkeley’s PhD deadlines run from November 16, 2026 to January 11, 2027.
- December 2026 is the busiest month at the two schools we counted: 119 of the 134 programs we counted on Berkeley’s PhD-only list and Princeton’s deadline table close then (our count).
- Master’s programs spread wider. Fordham’s listed master’s programs pair a January 8, 2027 priority deadline with a July 30, 2027 final deadline. At BU Wheelock, all but three master’s and certificate programs pair January 15, 2027 with July 1 or August 1, 2027.
- Funding can hinge on the earlier date. Fordham links full consideration for merit scholarships to its priority deadline. KU Anthropology’s funding section names complete files “received by December 1” for all forms of financial assistance, a day before its December 2, 2026 application deadline.
When grad school application deadlines fall for fall 2027
The PhD dates cluster. Berkeley’s Graduate Division program list gives a date for 87 fall-term programs listed under “Doctoral / PhD” alone (three joint MS/PhD rows, all due December 1, 2026, left out; our count, read October 14, 2026). The earliest is November 16, 2026 and the latest January 11, 2027, and 73 of the 87 close in December 2026. Fifty-two of them share one date: December 1, 2026.
Princeton’s deadline table lists 47 programs for fall 2027. Psychology closes first, on November 15, 2026. Then 20 programs close on December 1, 16 on December 15 and 10 on December 21, 2026. Princeton adds: “Earlier applications are encouraged; late applications are not accepted.”
All the schools and departments we read fall inside the same window:
| School or program | Fall 2027 deadline | Note |
|---|---|---|
| UC Berkeley Graduate Division, 87 PhD-only programs | November 16, 2026 to January 11, 2027 | 73 close in December 2026 |
| Princeton Graduate School, 47 programs | November 15 to December 21, 2026 | Late applications not accepted |
| WashU Arts & Sciences, all doctoral programs | December 1, 2026 | Master's dates set by each department |
| Fordham GSAS, 10 PhD programs | November 16, 2026 to January 8, 2027 | Seven of the 10 close on January 8, 2027 |
| USC Psychology PhD | December 1, 2026 | Clinical science area: priority deadline November 9, 2026 |
| Michigan Comparative Literature PhD | December 1, 2026 | Fall entry only |
| KU Anthropology, MA and PhD | December 2, 2026 | Late applications not accepted |
| UNC School of Education, Education PhD | December 15, 2026 | Due by 11:59 PM |
| BU Wheelock, two PhD programs | November 15, 2026 | All materials must arrive by then |
Every PhD deadline in this table falls between November 15, 2026 and January 11, 2027. December is the common month at Berkeley and Princeton, but not everywhere: none of Fordham’s 10 PhD programs closes in December, and BU Wheelock’s two close November 15, 2026. WashU Arts & Sciences sets one date for all its doctoral programs: “Doctoral program applications are due December 1, 2026.” Professional doctorates can run later: BU Wheelock’s EdD in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies has a final deadline of March 1, 2027.
Some departments write their own rule for the date itself. KU Anthropology sets December 1, but “If December 1 falls on a holiday or Saturday-Tuesday, the deadline will be the following Wednesday.” December 1, 2026 is a Tuesday, which is why its fall 2027 deadline is December 2, 2026 (our reading).
Master's deadlines: priority, general and final dates
Master’s programs on the pages we read run longer, and often in stages. Fordham’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences notes that “Application deadlines vary by program and entry term.” For fall 2027 entry, its listed master’s programs carry four dates. The priority deadline is January 8, 2027 and the general consideration deadline March 31; rolling admissions start April 1, and the final deadline is July 30, 2027.
BU’s Wheelock College of Education & Human Development works in stages too. Its master’s and certificate programs have a fall 2027 priority deadline of January 15, 2027. Three programs close on their own dates instead: Sport Psychology Counseling (EdM) and Child Life & Family-Centered Care (MS) on February 1, 2027, and Mental Health & School Counseling (EdM) on March 15, 2027. For all the others, the final deadlines are July 1, 2027 for international on-campus applicants and August 1, 2027 for domestic and online applicants.
| Fordham GSAS, listed master's programs | BU Wheelock, master's and certificates | UC Berkeley, 65 single-degree master's and professional programs | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Priority deadline | January 8, 2027 | January 15, 2027 | Not shown on the list |
| Other dates | General consideration March 31, 2027; rolling from April 1, 2027 | Final deadline February 1 or March 15, 2027 for three named programs | One date per program; 60 close in December 2026 or January 2027 |
| Final deadline | July 30, 2027 | July 1, 2027 (international on-campus); August 1, 2027 (domestic and online), all other programs | Latest April 15, 2027 |
Berkeley’s list has 65 fall-term programs listed under “Masters / Professional” alone, leaving out MBA programs, concurrent and joint degrees and one row dated December 15, 2027. Of those 65, 60 close in December 2026 or January 2027 (our count). Berkeley’s application-process page puts the window at “September to December, but as late as February, depending on the program.” The list goes a little further: the two-year MPH in Food, Nutrition and Population Health closes March 1, 2027, and the Anthropology 5th-Year MA, open to Berkeley students only, closes April 15, 2027.
What priority and rolling deadlines mean on these pages
Neither term has one meaning across schools, so read each program’s own definition.
Priority deadlines
At Fordham, “Priority deadlines ensure full consideration for admission and available merit scholarship opportunities.” At BU Wheelock, “Applications submitted by this date will receive priority consideration for admission and scholarship.” Applying after the priority date is still possible there, on different terms. BU says “Applications completed after the priority deadline will be considered for admission on a space-available basis.”
Rolling admissions
Fordham defines the term: “Programs with rolling admissions continue reviewing completed applications after the General Consideration deadline until the final application deadline or until the cohort reaches capacity.” BU Wheelock says many of its programs “accept applications on a rolling basis,” but it stops taking Boston Campus applications six weeks before classes begin. A rolling window can therefore close early if a program fills (our reading of Fordham’s “cohort reaches capacity”).
Funding can hinge on the earlier date
At Fordham, and in BU Wheelock’s programs with July or August final deadlines, the date that matters for scholarships comes months before the last date you can apply. Fordham ties full consideration for merit scholarships to its January 8, 2027 priority deadline, almost seven months before its July 30, 2027 final deadline. At BU Wheelock, “Scholarships will be awarded after the priority deadline based on availability at the time of review.”
At the PhD programs we read, funding follows the main deadline. KU Anthropology says “Completed application files received by this date will be considered for all forms of financial assistance,” including department nominations for university awards and teaching assistantships. Its Funding section names that date as December 1, while the deadline it prints for fall 2027 is December 2, 2026, so a file finished by December 1, 2026 meets both (our reading). KU also asks applicants who want departmental support to “clearly state this in the personal statement.”
At UNC’s School of Education, some awards from The Graduate School “are based on program nominations,” so applications “must be complete by the December due date.” Michigan’s Comparative Literature PhD says “The Department does not require a separate application for fellowships administered by the Department,” though other aid needs its own applications.
After admission, the deadlines run the other way: the school’s offer comes with dates of its own. Cornell’s Graduate School says “In most cases, offers that include a funding package or other financial aid are made no later than April 1” (application review). At schools that sign the Council of Graduate Schools’ April 15 Resolution, admitted students “are under no obligation to accept or decline offers of financial support prior to April 15.” For programs beginning in fall 2027, institutions must re-sign it.
How to plan around grad school deadlines
The steps below are our advice, built on the rules these pages state.
- List every program with its own date and time. Berkeley says “Applications are due by 8:59 PM PST on the deadline date.” Princeton’s cutoff is 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, and USC Psychology’s is 11:59 p.m. Pacific on December 1, 2026. The same calendar date can end at different hours.
- Treat the deadline as the date for a complete file. BU Wheelock says “All deadlines reflect the due date for a complete application,” including transcripts and letters. USC Psychology wants letters of recommendation by its December 1 deadline, or by November 9 for the clinical science priority date.
- Plan backward from the earliest date on your list. For fall 2027 entry, the first psychology PhD deadlines we read are November 15, 2026 at Princeton and November 16, 2026 at Berkeley and for Fordham’s Clinical Psychology PhD. Written statements are part of the file at the programs that ask for them, so a statement of purpose or personal statement needs its final draft before the first date, not the last.
- Aim for the priority date if funding matters. At Fordham and BU Wheelock, that is the date tied to scholarship consideration.
- Read this cycle’s page, not last year’s. Princeton marks several fall 2027 dates with an asterisk that “Indicates a change in the application deadline from last year.”
If you want a second reader before your earliest deadline, ExceptionalGrad’s advisors “will review your application, help edit essays, optimize your C.V., and assist with interview preparation,” in the words of our graduate application advising page.
Frequently Asked Questions
For fall 2027 entry, the PhD deadlines we read run from November 15, 2026 to January 11, 2027. Most fall in December 2026 at Berkeley and Princeton, but Fordham’s and BU Wheelock’s do not: BU Wheelock’s two PhD programs close November 15, 2026, and seven of Fordham’s 10 close January 8, 2027.
It means what each program says. For fall 2027 master’s entry, Fordham’s priority date (January 8, 2027) secures full consideration for admission and merit scholarships; BU Wheelock’s (January 15, 2027) brings priority consideration for both. USC’s Psychology PhD uses it differently: its clinical science area starts reviewing at its November 9, 2026 priority date.
Some master’s programs do. Fordham opens rolling admissions on April 1, 2027 for its listed fall 2027 master’s programs, and BU Wheelock says many of its programs take applications on a rolling basis. The PhD pages we read set fixed dates: Princeton, USC Psychology and KU Anthropology do not take late applications.
